5/10/2023 0 Comments Harold bloom's the western canonThis made America open to the successive waves of continental critical theory which have culminated in Deconstruction, the reductio ad absurdum of formalism, which holds that literature, being incapable of referring to anything outside itself, is not for anything.įaced with the ascendancy of such pale-blooded approaches, Bloom has pursued a different path. In America formalist approaches starting with New Criticism have been concerned with analysing underlying literary structures. Mostly critics have been content with asking: What is literature? British criticism has usually been literary history - explications of texts and of the relationships between them. What should be our central question in approaching literature? The celebrated American literary critic Harold Bloom proposes one: What is literature for? This question may sound obvious, but it is not one with which twentieth century criticism has been much concerned. 5/10/2023 0 Comments The magi o henryHenry makes the beautiful point that those who will give in love what is most precious to them, are true "magi" - wise men. "The Gift of the Magi" refers to the gifts presented to Jesus while in the manger by the wise men, and O. In the original short story, though not in this children’s copy, Della says that “perhaps the hairs on her head were numbered, but no one could count her love for Jim.” The Robert Sauber picture book shows one or two crystal globes with images of Della and Jim inside them. Otherwise, there are no instances wherein characters face a moral choice. But her love for him causes her to sacrifice the other most-dear thing to her in order to get the money she needs for his gift.ĭella and Jim care for each other deeply, and the story shows their willingness to give up anything for each other. It is Christmas Eve, and with only one dollar and eight-seven cents saved up after all her scrimping during the year, Della despairs of being able to buy a worthy present for Jim. Henry and has some changes from the original most significantly, the characters Della and Jim are depicted as brother and sister in this picture book, while they are husband and wife in the original. This is an adaption of the short story by O. Eventually the family went into hiding in Tennessee, but arguably their “disappearance” takes place long before they move-as John and his daughter, Cylin, alternately narrate, readers can see how the shooting erased the family's sense of themselves. In 1979, in an underworld-style hit, a gunman shot John Busby, a policeman in Cape Cod a fluke saved John's life, but he was permanently disfigured and disabled, and the family placed under 24-hour protection. No one with even a marginal interest in true crime writing should miss this page-turner, by turns shocking and almost unbearably sad. 5/10/2023 0 Comments The wolf den by elodie harperAmara has learnt that everything in this city has its price. Brief Summary of Book: The Wolf Den (Wolf Den Trilogy, #1) by Elodie Harper 5/10/2023 0 Comments Tom clancy's no remorseMaybe it was because there was earth-shaking construction going on outside my window while I was listening to it, but the vibrations from both the music and the power tools made me feel like I was in an IMAX theatre again, which is really all I’ve wanted over the past year and a half. It’s not terribly dissimilar to the ungodly rumbles and symphonic beauty of Hans Zimmer’s work with Christopher Nolan, especially the now meme’d-to-death foghorn blasts of Inception. Here’s the official landing page for the film, in case you want. Prominently featuring the Icelandic musician’s unique blend of ambient sounds and discombobulating chord tones, the score is 23 tracks of tightly wound, pulse-quickening atmosphere and suspense. That means Tom Clancy's Without Remorse will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in perpetuity, after launching on April 30. Jónsi’s score is a fantastic counterpoint to the bland action thriller it happens to be accompanying. You get the feeling that all of this would have been better suited as a video game. It should be no surprise that one of the screenwriters, Will Staples, is best known for his contributions to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 story. Jordan can’t help but be a kinetic presence when onscreen, but he and the rest of the cast also can’t help but be bogged down by bloated action scenes and bizarrely written dialogue. The movie itself is a bit of a wash: Michael B. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Homebodies by Charles Addams

"I'm not afraid, if that's what you mean." "Oh, no, not afraid. He could just as easily have been another. He wore the tattered combat fatigues and the high filthy boots of all of them. Does it affect you the same as it does me? Each time, before I enter battle, my stomach grows very nervous, tense." Waller did not recognize this man. "No, not me, thanks." "The reason I ask," said the black man, "is because I wonder. "Would you care for something more to eat?" asked the stout, heavily muscled black man who crouched nearest to Waller. The nearest significant human habitation was a hundred miles from here. The moon, a thin crescent, hung low in the sky, while the stars burned with a splendor impossible to equal in any of the supposedly civilized centers of the world. Waller sat with his arms hugging his chest, trying not to shake or shiver. A cold wind whipped gently across the flat, desolate plain, as Calvin Waller patiently waited for the campfire to spring sufficiently to life before joining the other men crouched around the orange flames. My latest adventure, that I undertook to celebrate Mary Stewart’s date in the Birthday Book of Neglected Lady Authors, took me to the isle of Corfu, which is said by many to be the setting of ‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare. I have been to the Pyrenees, to a Scottish island, to a French Chateau, to Delphi, to the heart of the English countryside, to Vienna, to a palace in the Lebanon …. Since I discovered what a wonderful writer Mary Stewart was – not so many years ago, though my mother had recommended her books many years earlier – I have come to love her writing and I have traveled to many wonderful places by book, in the company of a captivating band of heroines. |
